All natural & Organic
Why I switched to all natural and organic products?
Beginning & Hair
Now there is a lot of debate on the organic and natural food and product phenomenon. Which is understandable when people are use to doing things one way for years and all of a sudden something new is emerging it can be scary! But for me it was simply a personal choice that started with my hair. I've been natural for 4 years and in 2011 when I started transitioning I didn't want to continue to use the same products on my transitioning hair that I had used on my relaxed hair. So for myself I decided to do research on different products and the ingredients used to make them. I decided that I didn't want to use products with sulfates and silicones because I didn't want my hair to be stripped of its natural oils or to have any unnecessary build up from the silicones. This was pretty much how it all began and it was eventually a snow ball effect with other areas in my life.
Skin
Growing up I always had dry skin and just could not figure out why! It was flakey, dry and would often hurt because of the lack of moisture. So once again I began to do research on natural ways to combat excessive dryness. And I came across one my now favorite you tubers "Hey Fran Hey" she is like a natural guru and I love her dearly. But she introduced me to the oil cleansing method. Which is basically you using a natural oil to cleanse your skin (I used coconut oil) while keeping your skin soft and moisturized. My first thought was "now why would someone use oil to clean their face?" But I was desperate and it was winter and I figured what harm would come from just trying. So I tried it and LOVED IT. My skin was moisturized and some of my breakouts started to clear up. While the oil cleansing method worked wonders I did notice I started to get clusters of breakouts and I couldn't figure out why. So I went to LUSH and talked to one of the girls working there and told her about my skin and that I was using the oil cleansing method but I had been breaking out. She told me that when you do the oil cleaning method you should follow up with a toner so that the oil isn't just sitting on your skin clogging your pores. So she recommend a toner, which I've been using ever since "Eau Aroma Water." I have stopped using commercial lotions, shower gels, soap and deodorants all together. It is very much trial and error but once you find the products that work for you stick to it.
Food
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a serious foodie and self proclaimed "chef." I LOVE FOOD! But just recently I just started buying and cooking more natural and organic foods. My roommates loves and adores Mom's Organic Market, so one day I decided to check it out and got a couple things and I fell in love as well. All of the produce is locally grown with no pesticides. All of the food, meat, skin and hair products are natural or organic. I love the variety they have and that they always have amazing samples to try! When i'm feeling lazy and don't want to go to the grocery store I will order my groceries from Relay, which is a local, natural and organic grocery delivery service in Baltimore. The food quality is amazing and the delivery guys unpack and put away your groceries for you if you , amazing so sweet! By all means I'm not perfect at this all natural lifestyle, I am still learning but the goal is to be healthy and take care of your body.
How to start
1. Start small, start with hair or skin care. Don't throw everything away and start from scratch you'll get overwhelmed. Go into your local organic market or lush and talk to the employees and get recommendations and start there.
2. Do your research! This is so imperative because you never want to start something blind.
3. Have fun and enjoy the process!
